The Raspberry Pi Camera Module 2 is an 8-megapixel camera module designed for use with Raspberry Pi boards. It features a Sony IMX219 sensor, which is a significant upgrade from the 5-megapixel OmniVision OV5647 sensor found in the original camera module. This new sensor offers improved image quality, color fidelity, and low-light performance .

The Camera Module 2 supports high-definition video recording with modes such as 1080p30, 720p60, and VGA90, in addition to still capture capabilities. It connects to the Raspberry Pi via a 15cm ribbon cable to the CSI port, and it is compatible with all models of Raspberry Pi 1, 2, 3, and 4 .

One of the key features of the Camera Module 2 is its ability to be used for various applications, from time-lapse and slow-motion videos to other creative projects. It can also be used in home security systems and wildlife camera traps due to its popularity and versatility .

The camera module works with the MMAL and V4L APIs and has numerous third-party libraries available for it, including the Picamera Python library, which makes it easy to integrate into projects .

However, it's worth noting that the Camera Module 2 has a different focus setting compared to the original camera module. The v2 cameras were set at around 2 meters focus, instead of the infinity focus like the v1.3 and v2.1 camera models. This means that users might need to manually adjust the focus using the provided adjustment wheel to get clear images .

For Raspberry Pi Zero models, a Raspberry Pi Zero camera cable is required as the standard cable supplied with the camera module is not compatible with the Raspberry Pi Zero camera connector .
