Raspberry Pi 5 marks a significant leap forward in the Raspberry Pi lineage, offering a substantial boost in performance and a range of new features that cater to both enthusiasts and professionals. Here's a detailed overview of the Raspberry Pi 5:

The Raspberry Pi 5 is powered by a 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, which is a substantial upgrade from the previous models, offering up to 3 times the performance of the Raspberry Pi 4 . This new processor, combined with the updated GPU, provides a seamless desktop experience and opens doors for new industrial applications.

The GPU has also seen a significant upgrade with the new VideoCore VII, which operates at 800MHz and supports OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2. This enhancement allows for dual 4Kp60 HDMI display outputs, providing a smooth visual experience suitable for media-rich applications .

One of the standout features of the Raspberry Pi 5 is the RP1 chip, which is designed in-house by Raspberry Pi and handles a multitude of I/O functions. This chip has doubled the USB bandwidth, allowing for faster transfers with external USB drives and other high-speed peripherals. The previous dual-channel 1Gbps MIPI camera and display interface has been replaced with a pair of four-channel 1.5Gbps MIPI transceivers, tripling the total bandwidth and supporting a combination of up to two cameras or displays .

The Raspberry Pi 5 also introduces a single-channel PCI Express 2.0 interface for high-bandwidth peripherals, a feature that was not present in earlier models. This opens up new possibilities for connecting powerful external devices .

In terms of memory, the Raspberry Pi 5 offers 4GB or 8GB of LPDDR4X-4267 SDRAM, which is a significant increase in speed and capacity compared to the Raspberry Pi 4 . This allows for more robust multitasking and handling of memory-intensive applications.

For connectivity, the Raspberry Pi 5 supports dual-band 802.11ac wireless LAN and Bluetooth 5.0 with BLE. It also features Gigabit Ethernet, with the option for Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) support via a separate HAT .

The Raspberry Pi 5 comes with two USB 3.0 ports that can operate at full speed simultaneously, along with two USB 2.0 ports. This provides ample connectivity for a variety of peripherals and external devices .

The board maintains the familiar 40-pin GPIO header, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of add-on boards and projects. Additionally, it introduces a fan connector, a real-time clock (RTC) with an RTC battery connector, and a power button, all of which are new features to the Raspberry Pi lineup .

The Raspberry Pi 5 is designed to operate without the need for additional cooling under typical client workloads. However, for heavy loads, the device can be paired with official cooling solutions, which can help maintain optimal performance .

27W USB-C PD Power Supply

The new 27W USB-C PD (Power Delivery) Power Supply will deliver a maximum of 5.1V, 5A enabling the Raspberry Pi 5 to power a wider range of peripherals. The total power drawn from the four USB ports on Raspberry Pi 5 is limited by default to a nominal 600mA; this limit is automatically increased to a nominal 1.6A when the USB-C PD Power Supply is detected.

The USB-C PD Power Supply is also capable of delivering 3A @ 9V, 2.25A @ 12V, and 1.8A @ 15V to PD-compatible products, making it a good cost-effective power supply for many general-purpose, non-Raspberry Pi use cases.

Raspberry Pi 5 case

The new case is a refinement of the Raspberry Pi 4 case, with improved thermal features to support the higher peak power consumption of Raspberry Pi 5. lt integrates a variable-speed fan, powered and controlled from a dedicated connector on the Raspberry Pi 5 PCB.

The case is available in our signature red/white colour scheme at launch, with black/grey to follow.

Active cooler

The Active Cooler provides an alternative cooling solution for users who wish to use their Raspberry Pi 5 under sustained heavy load without a case.It combines a large metal heatsink with a variable-speed blower, again powered and controlled via the fan connector, and attaches to the Raspberry Pi 5 PCB via sprung pins into a pair of mounting holes.

RTC battery

The power-management IC used on Raspberry Pi 5 integrates a real-timeclock, and charging circuitry for a button cell which can power the clock while main power is disconnected.

We offer a Panasonic ML-2020 Lithium Manganese Dioxide battery, with a two-pin plug suitable for connection to the battery connector on the Raspberry Pi 5 PCB, and double-sided adhesive pad to attach it to the inside of a case or another convenient location.

Camera and display adapter cables

Raspberry Pi 5 provides two four-lane MIPI connectors, each of which can support either a camera or a display. These connectors use the same 22-way, 0.5mm-pitch “mini” FPC format as the Compute Module Development Kit, and require adapter cables to connect to the 15-way, 1mm-pitch "standard" format connectors on our current camera and display products.

We offer mini-to-standard adapter cables for cameras and displays in 200mm, 300mm and 500mm lengths.

Note that a camera cable should not be used with a display, and vice versa.
